The Vodafone Coral Coast Carnival is set to resurface this year.
The Sigatoka Town Council’s chief executive officer, Tulsi Ram, said the council was going ahead with the event.
“I came here in December last year and decided we should revive it since it was last held in 2009,” he said.
“The big support from the local government has also boosted preparations as they have asked various councils to do something for their communities.”
The Vodafone Coral Coast Carnival will be held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from September 19 to 26.
Mr Ram said the main objective of the event was to help the council raise money to beautify the town and get people together to enjoy themselves for one week.
“We want to make a different atmosphere and upgrade the towns’ facilities, parks and gardens since we are also the second tourism town in the west,” Mr Ram said.
“Our major sponsor is Vodafone. We are speaking to hotels and resorts on the Coral Coast. We are also pleased that we have secured four contestants from them.”
He said the organising committee was looking at having 10 contestants and at present they have confirmed seven contestants, with three more months left to go.
“The queens will be representing businesshouses and we will be visiting villages and speaking to the provincial council to get their views on the event,” he said.
“The person who is crowned will win a trip overseas and will qualify for the Miss Fiji Pageant in Nadi.”
Mr Ram said members of the public were welcome to approach the Sigatoka Town Council for booth spaces.
“People have started to pay for booth spaces, so whoever wants to book a stall should come now because spaces are going fast,” Mr Ram said.
“This is the best time to raise money and we will be flexible with special rates for those doing community income generation projects.”
